WRINKLES - Beauty Tips

Beauty Tips for glowing skin

Wrinkles are delicate creases caused by thin, sagging skin. These are especially visible on the face, neck and hands. Wrinkles appear when the collagen and elastin present in the connective tissue of the skin is weakened or decrease in number. Skin that has suffered such damage appears thinner, loses fat content, elasticity and smoothness.

Symptoms for wrinkled skin

Some of the symptoms of wrinkled skin are -

Lined and creased skin
Sagging skin
Areas that are more affected include sensitive skin near the eyes, lips and neck.

Though some creases are temporary, they may become deeper and more permanent due to ageing.

Wrinkles occur due to ageing process

Though wrinkles are a part and parcel of the ageing process, premature wrinkles are a cause of concern for many. Some of the common causes of wrinkles on skin are -

Over exposure to sun - The damage caused by the ultraviolet rays of the sun is known as photoageing.

Smoking - Smoking hastens the ageing process. The large amount of free radicals produced by cigarette smoke is one of the biggest culprits for premature wrinkles. Free radicals can play havoc with the skin, damaging it to an alarming extent.

Pollution - Environmental factors such as exposure to air pollutants, dust, chemicals and harsh lights can cause wrinkles on skin over a period of time.

Repeated motions such as squinting can cause wrinkles around the eyes. These are referred to as "crow's feet". Smiling and frowning can also cause laugh lines around the mouth or frown lines on the forehead.

Drug use

Stress

Weight Loss - Rapid weight loss can cause wrinkles as the volume of the fat cells (which have a cushioning effect) are drastically reduced. This causes the skin to sag and crease.

Loss of Vitamin E - Depletion of this important vitamin can cause the skin quality to deteriorate.

Toothache Relief diet

Proper diet

Diet plays a vital role in dental health. The condition of the teeth after they are formed depends upon the foods one eats from day to day. Dental decay, the destruction of the bone around the teeth, and infection of the gums can be prevented with an appropriate diet. In fact, with a proper diet, the teeth and jaw bones can be made harder and healthier as the years go by.

Restrict sugar intake, include raw vegetables in diet

It is important to restrict one's sugar intake, and to ensure that the diet includes plenty of raw vegetables and wholewheat bread. Whole foods are ideal for the teeth. Fibreless refined foods allow particles to accumulate on the teeth in a sticky mass where they can do great harm. The gums need friction to keep them firm and whole foods also help remove plaque. They are therefore called 'detergent foods' by some dentists. In preventing tooth decay, what one eats is no doubt important but equally important is when one eats

Avoid frequent small snacks and sugar intake

Frequent small snacks are very harmful to teeth, as they produce an acid medium in which the bacteria thrive. The number of times one eats sugar is one of the most important factors in determining the rate of decay. For this reason, it is better to eat sweets at the end of a meal rather than between meals.

Other Toothache cure

Other toothache treatment

Proper cleaning of the teeth is very essential to prevent tooth decay and consequent toothache. There are many theories on how best to clean the teeth. The consensus of dental opinion however seems to back using a circular motion with the brush, so as to ensure that all dental surfaces are cleaned. One should not be afraid to touch the gums with the brush, as this gentle stimulation improves the blood circulation in the gums.

CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

Medical Treatment

Usually Analgesics and muscle relaxants are advised . In more severe cases the orthopaedic doctor may suggest cortisone injections near the joints of the vertebral bodies to ease the swelling of the nerves and relieve pain.

Surgical Treatment

If the medical treatment and physiotherapy fails, and the condition is severe, where the nerves are affected, surgery may be required.. Decompression of the nerve is done to relieve the nerve which is compressed by the bones and the disc.

Physiotherapy

The goal of physiotherapy treatment is to relieve pain, and enhance movements of the neck.

Shortwave Diathermy - A disc or heating pad is placed over the back of the neck. The warmth obtained from the shortwave diathermy current relaxes the muscle and the pain is relieved.

Cervical Traction - Traction is a mechanical device, which supports the head and chin. It is used to relieve the nerve compression by a bone.

Posture correction - Simple postural exercises can be taught to correct the faulty position of the neck.

Motivation is given to maintain the erect posture:

Collars - Two types of collars can be prescribed:

Soft Collar - Soft collar is used during night times to prevent awkward position of the neck during sleep.

Firm Collar - Firm collar steadies the neck and relieve pain, especially during traveling or work. It is removed when the pain subsides.

Relaxation

Relaxation is essential part of treatment. Tension in neck and shoulder muscle, pain, anxiety are all relieved by relaxation.

Relaxation can be done in two ways:

Physical Relaxation.

Mental Relaxation.

Physical Relaxation:

The whole body is relaxed by free suitable and comfortable positions, so that the muscles are freed from tension and the pain is relieved. For eg., position of relaxation - when you are lying flat on your back.

One pillow under the head

One cushion for the shoulder and

One under knees.

The pillow should be firm and thin

This position will allow relaxation for your body while lying down.

Relaxation while sitting.
The head, neck and shoulder are supported by high backed chair, with a small pillow at lower back.

Feet supported on stool or low bench

Arm, resting on arm of chair or pillow

Mental Relaxation

Positive thinking and using imagination is the way of relaxing mentally. This type makes one feel better and breaks the pain cycle. Muscle tension, anxiety, loss of sleep and pain are all relieved by mental relaxation exercises like yoga.

Lifestyle Modifications

Some modifications in life style will help in over coming problems of cervical spondylosis. For example:-

Avoid any strain of neck and shoulder like reading and writing for long hours.

Avoid the use of very soft cushion bed and avoid using a very high pillow.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics concentrates on the architectural design of furnitures like desk, chairs, tables etc. The design of the furniture should be such that it should support the body structure without causing any undue strain to the muscles of the back and neck .

Do's and Dont's

If you are prone to cervical spondylosis, Avoid bad roads, if travelling by two or four wheelers

Do not sit for prolonged period of time in stressful postures

Do use firm collars while traveling

Do not lift heavy weights on head or back

Do not turn from your body but turn your body moving your feet first

Do turn to one side while getting up from lying down

Do the exercises prescribed regularly

Do use firm mattress, thin pillow or butterfly shaped pillow

Do not lie flat on your stomach.

CONSTIPATION

Constipation is a common disturbance of the digestive tract. In this condition, the bowels do not move regularly, or are not completely emptied when they move. This condition is the chief cause of many diseases as it produces toxins which find their way into the bloodstream and are carried to all parts of the body. Appendicitis, rheumatism, arthritis, high blood pressure, cataract., and cancer are only a few of the diseases in which chronic constipation is an important predisposing factor.

Grapes have proved very beneficial in overcoming constipation. The combination of the properties of the cellulose, sugar, and organic acid in grapes make them a laxative food. Their field of action is not limited to clearing the bowels only. They also tone up the stomach and intestines and relieve the most chronic constipation. One should take at least 350 gm of this fruit daily to achieve the desired results. When fresh grapes are not available, raisins, soaked in water, can be used. Raisins should be soaked for twenty-four to forty-eight hours. This will make them swell to the original size of the grapes. They should be eaten early in the morning, along with the water in which they have been soaked.

Constipation treatment using Orange

Orange is also beneficial in the treatment of constipation. Taking one or two oranges at bedtime and again on rising in the morning is an excellent way of stimulating the bowels. The general stimulating influence of orange juice excites peristaltic activity and helps prevent the accumulation of food residue in the colon.

Constipation treatment using Papaya and Figs

Other fruits specific for constipation are papaya and figs. Half a medium-sized papaya should be eaten at breakfast for it to act as a laxative. Both fresh and dry figs have a laxative effect. Four or five dry figs should be soaked overnight in a little water and eaten in the morning.

Constipation treatment using Spinach

Among the vegetables, spinach has been considered to be the most vital food for the entire digestive tract from time immemorial. Raw spinach contains the finest organic material for the cleansing, reconstruction, and regeneration of the intestinal tract. Raw spinach juice-100 ml, mixed with an equal quantity of water and taken twice daily, will cure the most aggravated cases of constipation within a few days.

Constipation treatment using Other Remedies

Half a lime, squeezed is a glass of hot water, with half a teaspoon of salt is also an effective remedy for constipation. Drinking water which has been kept overnight in a copper vessel, first thing in the morning, brings good results. Linseed (alse) is extremely useful in difficult cases of constipation. A teaspoon of linseed swallowed with water before each meal provides both roughage and lubrication.

Constipation diet

Natural and simple diet consisting of unrefined foods

The most important factor in curing constipation is a natural and simple diet. This should consist of unrefined foods such as wholegrain cereals, bran, honey, lentils, green and leafy vegetables, fresh and dry fruits, and milk products in the form of butter, ghee, and cream. The diet alone is not enough.

Toning up the muscles also helps in the treatment of constipation. Fresh air, outdoor games, walking, swimming, and exercise play an important role in strengthening the muscles, and thereby preventing constipation.

Asthma ATTACKS & Allergies

A Dangerous Link

Asthma is a disease of the respiratory system. The bronchial tubes, which carry air to the lungs, get inflamed, and the simple fact of catch a breath becomes torture. The pollen and some substances that travel in the air can give us an allergic reaction. That allergic reaction can be the trigger for an asthma attack. New medical studies prove the link between allergies and asthma attacks, and doctors recommend that the people who suffer from asthma get tested for allergies.

Get the allergens that can trigger the asthma attacks under control improves the lungs health. The of the allergies are well known: watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing. In a patient with asthma, coughing will be a that will alert them of the possibility of an asthma attack. That would be the moment to go seek for medical attention.

We can do some things to prevent or minimize asthma attacks. Always under medical supervision, there are medicines and procedures that can help. Generally, people diagnosed with asthma, is treated with daily doses of corticosteroids. Some "puffs" with a spray in the morning and at night will prevent the inflammation of the bronchial tubes. In more critical season, as spring, may be necessary to increase the dose of the corticosteroids, and it is important to keep in mind that this medication does not treat asthma attacks, but helps prevent them.

Another important way to prevent asthma attacks is to keep an asthma diary and monitor the lung function. We can do that using a peak expiratory flow, a little machine that measures our lung capacity. We inhale and exhale on it and it gives us a result. We write it down in a graphic that would make the asthma diary. This is very important, because helps the doctor to know about how our lungs "behave" in different moments of the year, and can identify the triggers that cause our asthma attacks.

Once we tested for allergies, we should be persistent and use our medication. If we sports, it is important that we know if the activity is a trigger for our asthma attacks, maybe some allergies medication will avoid having to stop practicing.

In the house, we should extreme the precautions, cleaning and dusting all the time, to prevent allergens that can affect us. Vacuum is a very effective way to eliminate dust mites, animal dander, indoor mold or even pollen, all of them known causes for allergies. Wash bed covers, sheets and pillow cases often, and avoid an excess of around the house. Carpets have to been extremely clean, because they can store a lot of allergens. Remember that secondhand smoking can be a dangerous asthma trigger.

The most important information about asthma is to know the ways to prevent it, and the necessity of being persistent on the medication. Always follow the doctor's instructions.

Heart Attack Survival

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Let's say it's 6.15 pm and you're going home (alone of course), after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated.

Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

A cardiologist says If everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save at least one life.

DATES - Khajoor

Date-palm is a tree of the Phoenix dactylifera of the palm family. The date-palm grows about 23 metres (75 ft) tall and its stem is strongly marked with pruned stubs of old leaf bases, terminates in a crown of graceful, shining, pinnate leaves about 5 metres long. Male and female flowers are borne on separate plants. Under cultivation, the female flowers are artificially pollinated. The date is a one-seeded fruit or berry usually oblong but varying in shape, size, colour, quality and consistency of flesh according to the condition of culture. More than 1000 dates may appear in a single bunch weighing 8 kg or more. The dried fruit is more than 50% sugar by weight and contains about 2% each of protein, fat and mineral water. Syrup, alcohol, vinegar and strong liquor are derived from the fruit. The sap is also used as a beverage either fresh or fermented but because the method of 'extraction seriously injures the palm, only those trees that produce little fruit are used for sap. When a palm is cut down, the tender terminal bud is eaten as salad. Date-sugar, a commercial product of India, is obtained from the sap of a closely related species Phoenix sylvestris.

The fresh fruit is nutritious, tonic and mild laxative. It contains vitamins A and B, calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus and alkaloids. Its infusion with milk is nourishing and restorative tonic; for this reason it is given during convalescence from fevers and small-pox. The fruit is very good for cough and cold, asthma, laryngitis, chest complaints, fevers, dysentery and liver complaints. Taking dates with milk early in the morning during winter months is found to be a better tonic than other ordinary tonics and is very easily available at that time. Syrup prepared from dates is also useful in cases of diarrhoea, marasmus, diabetes insipidus.

Benefit and uses of Dates.

  • A gum that exudes from the wounded trunk is employed in India for treating diarrhea and genito-urinary ailments.
  • High-energy date fruits have been placed high on the diets of the health conscious.
  • Dates are also recommended for women in the post-partum period and lactating due to its value as a nutritious, high-energy food.
  • In the form of an infusion, decoction, sirup or paste, is administered as a treatment for sore throat, colds, bronchial catarrh. It is taken to relieve fever, cystisis, gonorrhea, edema, liver and abdominal troubles.
  • Bedouin Arabs, who eat them on a regular basis, show an extremely low incidence rate of cancer and heart disease.

CHOLESTEROL CONTROL

You may have noticed that beef and eggs have become four-letter words. It's all because of cholesterol, a substance that's gotten a reputation for breaking more hearts than a high school prom queen.

But cholesterol isn't entirely bad. The human body actually needs it--and produces it--to help protect nerves and build new cells and hormones. In fact, our bodies get all the cholesterol they need by making it on their own. The trouble starts when we add to the cholesterol our bodies produce, which can happen when we eat the all-American diet of cheeseburgers, steaks, pizza, ice cream or any food that is or includes an animal product.

Excess cholesterol settles along arterial walls, and that excess can clog arteries and restrict blood flow, leading to angina pain, heart attack or stroke. (Cholesterol is also a leading cause of gallstones.)

If your doctor has determined that you have high levels of cholesterol in your blood, you probably have been told the importance of limiting or eliminating it--which means reducing or avoiding its only dietary sources: meat, eggs, dairy products and the foods that contain them. But here are some other ways to control your cholesterol with diet.

Stock up on vitamin E.

Scientists have discovered that we have both good (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL) and bad (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) cholesterol running through our bloodstream. Consuming 400 international units of vitamin E each day may help keep the bad cholesterol from oxidizing-an internal "rusting" process that causes the cholesterol to harden into arterial plaque, which in turn causes heart disease. Vitamin E also raises the level of good cholesterol.

"Taking vitamin E supplements helps prevent the cholesterol in your body from plaquing, so it does less damage," says Karen E. Burke, M.D., Ph.D., a dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon in New York City who has studied the various effects of vitamin E. Vitamin E is found in vegetable oils, nuts and grains, but it would be very difficult to obtain 400 international units daily from diet alone. Be sure to check with your doctor, though, before beginning a supplement program.

Eat breakfast every morning.

Breakfast skippers tend to have higher cholesterol levels than those who start off their mornings with a bellyful, according to studies. One reason may be that breakfast skippers make up for missing the morning feast by munching on unhealthy snacks later on, suggests John L. Stanton, Ph.D., professor of food marketing at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
Research also shows that those who eat ready-to-eat cereal for breakfast have lower cholesterol levels than those choosing other morning entrées.

Nibble throughout the day.

One way to lower your cholesterol is simply to change how often you eat. Research has shown that large meals trigger the release of large amounts of insulin, according to David Jenkins, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center at St. Michael's Hospital at the University of Toronto. Insulin release in turn stimulates the production of an enzyme that increases cholesterol production by the liver.

Having smaller, more frequent meals (but not increasing overall calories) may limit insulin release and play a role in cholesterol control and heart disease prevention, speculates Dr. Jenkins.

Add vitamin C to your menu.

Other vitamins and minerals also have a beneficial effect on cholesterol. Research by Paul Jacques, Sc.D., an epidemiologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, shows that people with diets high in vitamin C tend to have higher HDL levels. Vitamin C is especially beneficial when you get it from fruits and vegetables that also have a cholesterol- lowering fiber called pectin. Pectin surrounds cholesterol and helps transport it out of your digestive system before it gets into your blood. Vitamin C-rich, pectin-rich foods include citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, apples and spinach.

Go heavy on garlic.

Vampires aren't the only thing garlic keeps away. In large doses--at least seven cloves daily--this food can significantly reduce cholesterol. Of course, that's probably more garlic than most people eat in a month. To get a similar benefit, try odorless garlic pills. When people with moderately high cholesterol took four capsules a day of an odorless liquid garlic extract called Kyolic, their cholesterol levels initially rose but then fell an average of 44 points after six months, according to a research study headed by Benjamin Lau, M.D., Ph.D., at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. You can find garlic pills at most health food stores.

Don't depend on decaf.

Decaffeinated coffee actually raises LDL levels more than regular brew, so its the worst beverage selection if you have high cholesterol, according to Dr. Jenkins. It may be because the beans used for decaf are stronger than "regular" beans. Frequent coffee drinkers (those who drink it daily) typically have a 7 percent cholesterol increase, as shown in a study at Stanford University in Stanford, California.

Gravitate toward grapes.

There's a cholesterol- lowering compound in virtually all products containing grape skin, including wine, according to pomologist Leroy Creasy, Ph.D., of Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Ithaca, New York. You can take advantage of these cholesterol- clobbering qualities by drinking grape juice or simply eating grapes.

Reach for grapefruit.

In a study conducted by James Cerda, M.D., a gastroenterologist and professor of medicine at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Gainesville, people who ate at least 1 1/2 cups of grapefruit sections every day lowered their cholesterol over 7 percent in two months. Grapefruit is among the fruits that contain cholesterol- lowering pectin.

Cook up some beans.

Lima beans, kidney beans, navy beans, soybeans and other legumes can all help lower your cholesterol, according to James W. Anderson, M.D., an expert in cholesterol research who is professor of medicine and clinical nutrition at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington. The reason these high-fiber legumes are so effective is because they, too, contain pectin. The more of these beans you can eat, the greater the benefits.

In one study, Dr. Anderson asked men to eat 1 1/2 cups of cooked beans a day. The result? Their cholesterol plummeted 20 percent in just three weeks. You probably won't go for much, but the more beans, the better--and high-fiber diets have many other benefits besides. Look for a cookbook or two that have great recipes with beans, and try to get more in your diet.

Munch a couple of carrots.

Bugs Bunny's favorite entrée is a boon to arteries, because carrots have plenty of cholesterol- lowering pectin. "It may be possible for people with high cholesterol to lower it 10 to 20 percent just by eating two carrots a day," says Peter D. Hoagland, Ph.D., a researcher at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Eastern Regional Research Center in Philadelphia.

Understanding Cholesterol Lingo

If all this talk about good and bad cholesterol is confusing, take heart. Here's how to understand it.
Serum cholesterol is the amount of this fatty substance in your bloodstream. Your serum cholesterol is what your doctor measures in a cholesterol test. A reading under 200 is desirable; a reading over 240 may be dangerous and is cause for concern.
Dietary cholesterol is what you eat. For instance, an egg has 213 milligrams; an apple has none. The American Heart Association recommends that you eat no more than 300 milligrams a day.
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the bad cholesterol that clogs arteries. The lower your LDL, the better.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is the good cholesterol that scours artery walls and helps remove harmful LDL. The higher your HDL, the better.

Home remedies for cholesterol #1:

Mix 1 tsp. of roasted chicory root. 1 tsp. of lime flowers. ½ tsp. of fenugreek seeds. ½ tsp. of ginger rhizome. 1 quart of water. Boil all ingredients, let it cool, strain. Drink 2 cups a day.

Home remedies for cholesterol #2:

Eat Garlic or take 1 capsule twice a day. It lowers LDL cholesterol level in 12% and increases HDLs.

Home remedies for cholesterol #3:

Niacin is particularly helpful in lowering cholesterol. However, inositol hexaniacinate is an even better and safer form of niacin. Inositol hexaniacinate is composed of one molecule of inositol and six molecules of niacin. Inositol hexaniacinate has been used in Europe for over thirty years to lower cholesterol levels. Inositol hexaniacinate yields slightly better results than standard niacin and is better tolerated because it is flush free and doesn't have any long-term side effects on the liver or blood sugar control.

Home remedies for cholesterol #4:

Chromium is vital in the synthesis of cholesterol, fats and protein. Chromium maintains stable blood sugar levels through proper insulin utilization and can be helpful for people with diabetes and/or hypoglycemia. Studies have shown that low plasma chromium levels can be an indication of coronary artery disease. Take 400 mcg. a day of chromium picolinate to improve HDL to LDL ratio.

Home remedies for cholesterol #5:

Taking Vitamin C with bioflavonoids 4000 mg. a day lowers cholesterol.

Home remedies for cholesterol #6:

Ginger reduces cholesterol and thins the blood improving circulation

Home remedies for cholesterol #7:

Guggul reduces LDL by 35% increases HDL by 20 % in 12 weeks, prevents arteriosclerosis. It performs better then many drugs in several studies.

Monthly Pregnancy guide

Learning you are pregnant is a joyous occasion. For the next nine months, you will go through many changes. Although each woman's pregnancy is different, this month-by-month guide can help you plan for some of the changes that may occur.

Your Body

By the end of the third month, you may have gained several pounds. You may feel very tired due to hormonal changes. Plan to get extra rest, sneaking in naps when you can and slow down. You should feel more energetic by the end of the third month.

You may need to urinate more frequently now. This is common during the first trimester of pregnancy, and again right before your baby is born.

For greater comfort, start wearing loosely fitting clothes.

See your health care provider by the second month to confirm your pregnancy. Regular check-ups will be scheduled for your prenatal care.

"Morning Sickness"

Nausea sometimes occurs early in pregnancy and usually goes away after the third month. Although it is called "morning sickness," it can happen any time of the day or night or you may never experience nausea.

Your Diet
Calcium, Fruits and Vegetables and Water

Calcium is very important for both you and your baby's bones and teeth. An easy way to include calcium in your diet is to eat and drink pasturized dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream.

Eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and bran cereal to make sure your bowel movements are regular. Be sure to drink plenty of water.

Your Feelings

Talk to your partner about how you are feeling. Ask for help, especially if you are tired. During this time you may be feel overweight and clumsy. Remember the extra weight is preparing your body for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

During pregnancy, it is common to have mood swings in your feelings about sex. It is not harmful to have sexual relations during pregnancy, but check with your healthcare provider about sexual activity during this time.

Month Four

Your Body

You may notice that you have more energy. Nausea and fatigue may stop. You may also notice that your belly looks larger because the baby has grown.

Your Diet

During pregnancy, your need for iron increases. To be sure you get enough iron, eat meats, leafy green vegetables, whole grain breads, dried fruits and beans.

Childbirth Preparation Classes

Childbirth classes should begin in month seven. Register now since classes fill up early.

Month Five

Your Body

Changes in your circulation require that you to stand and move often. Continue to do this throughout the remainder of your pregnancy. Your breasts may begin to leak a yellowish fluid called colostrum in preparation for breastfeeding and you may begin to feel the baby move during this month.

Your Diet

Be sure to eat food rich in Vitamin C. Your body does not store Vitamin C, so it is important to get a fresh supply every day. Good sources of Vitamin C are oranges, broccoli, and tomatoes.

Choosing a Health Care Provider for your Baby

Before you are admitted to the hospital to the hospital, you need to decide who will care for your baby after the delivery. This is a good time in your pregnancy to start looking for a health care provider for your baby if you have not already chosen one. Talk to your friends and ask them if they are happy with the health care provider who cares for their children. Many pediatricians and family care physicians will meet with you before your baby is born and let you interview them. It is a good idea to select someone that close to where you live! Month Six

Your Body

You may gain 3-4 pounds this month. Your feet may swell during the latter stages of pregnancy. Putting your feet up may help reduce any ankle swelling. Shop for wide, comfortable shoes, preferably with a flat heel.

Your Diet

You may crave certain foods or find that other foods smell or taste bad, even if you like them before you were pregnant. If this happens, try to find substitutes that provide the right nutrients.

Hospital Pre-Registration

If you have not already pre-registered at the hospital you will be delivering at, this is a good time to do so. Check with your health care provider or call the hospital directly for pre-registration information.

Month Seven

Your Body

You may gain 3-4 pounds this month. You may tire more easily. Again, ask for help. If you work, try to work shorter hours or a more flexible schedule if possible. Rest when you can.

Your Feelings

Mood swings and increased irritability are common during the last three months of pregnancy. Be sure to discuss your feelings with your partner.

Childbirth Preparation Classes

Begin childbirth preparation classes with your partner. These classes provide useful information on labor and birth, and what to expect.

Month Eight

Your Body

You may gain 3-4 pounds this month. Increases in frequency of urination, backaches, anxiety, heartburn, and shortness of breath occur at this time. Shop for larger maternity clothes, if necessary. You will be growing quite a bit these last few weeks.

Your Diet

What you eat is still important. If you have trouble sleeping, try drinking something warm and lying on your side with pillows to support your body. Taking a warm shower before bed also helps to relax you and make you sleepy.

Month Nine

Your Body

You may gain 3-4 pounds this month. Your stomach may change shape as the baby begins to position itself for birth. It may be easier to breathe now, but you may have to urinate more often. Get plenty of rest!

Hospital Stay

Make arrangements for your hospital stay. Keep important phone numbers and papers close by. Pack your bag for the hospital, and plan how you will get there at different times of the day or night. Make sure you have everything you will need when you come home from the hospital, such as food and diapers.

PRECAUTIONS for PREGNANCY

Special PRECAUTIONS

The first three months of pregnancy is the most crucial stage in your baby's development as all organs are forming. Throughout your pregnancy, but especially during the first three months, be very careful about using alcohol, drugs and medication. The following information outlines substances that require special precautions during pregnancy. Instructions are also given on how to keep track of fetal movements, an important sign of your baby's health.

Fish and Seafood

Fish and seafood are excellent low-fat sources of many nutrients and an important part of a healthy diet. However, there is a concern about eating fish and seafood during preganancy, since many types of fish may contain high levels of mercury. To be safe, choose wisely among types of fish.

Precautions

  • Eat no more than 12 ounces of cooked fish a week.
  • Do not eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish.
  • Limit albacore (white) tuna (even canned) to once a week.
  • If you eat fish caught by family and friends from local waters, check local advisories about the safety of fish.
  • Fish sticks and fast food sandwiches are commonly made from fish low in mercury

Alcohol

No one knows how much alcohol is safe to drink during pregnancy

The danger of alcohol use during pregnancy is that it may cause fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Babies born with FAS may:

  • grow more slowly
  • have learning problems
  • have abnormal facial features
There is no cure for these problems caused by fetal alcohol syndrome.

Alcohol is an ingredient in many over-the-counter medicines. For example, some cough medicines are 25 percent alcohol. Ask your health care provider if you should use such products during pregnancy. Always read the label before taking any medicine.

Precautions

Because there is no known safe level of alcohol taken during pregnancy, the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the March of Dimes caution pregnant women to follow the safest course:

  • Completely avoiding alcoholic beverages while pregnant.
  • Discuss your concerns about alcohol and pregnancy with your healthcare provider.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant that affects people differently. Caffeine can cause nervousness, irritability, anxiety, irregular heartbeats and problems sleeping. How caffeine affects an unborn baby is still under investigation. Some scientists believe caffeine can cause premature or smaller than normal babies or possible birth defects.

Precautions

  • Cut down or eliminate food and drinks that contain caffeine such as coffee, tea, colas and other soft drinks, cocoa and chocolate.
  • Caffeine is an ingredient in many non-prescription medicines such as headache, cold, allergy, and pills made to combat drowsiness.
  • If you have been consuming caffeine in large quantities, gradually decrease your intake. Stopping all at once can cause severe headaches, nausea, fatigue and other symptoms. Check with your health care provider for more information.

Cigarettes

Cigarette smoking may lead to serious health problems. Women who smoke during pregnancy usually give birth to babies that weigh less than those of women who don't smoke. Low birth
weight babies are more likely to have health problems such as:

  • Infections
  • Trouble keeping warm
  • Feeding problems
  • Breathing problems.
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
New research shows that exposure to second hand smoke is also linked to SIDS and can cause major health problems to your baby.

Precautions

  • Stop smoking or cut down your smoking when pregnant. There are many community programs available to assist you. Call the American Cancer Society for information on Smoke-Stopper Programs in your area. Call 1-800-NOBUTTS( 800-662-8887) .
  • Avoid smokers and smoking areas whenever possible.

Food Additives

Precautions

Whenever possible, try to minimize your use of

  • Processed food items (such as hot dogs)
  • Foods containing sodium nitrate, such as cured meats (hams, bacon, etc.); these substances may be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) .
  • Be sure to wash fruit and and peel carrots to avoid eating pesticides used on farms to kill insects.

Food Handling Concerns

Eating raw fish, meats or poultry may increase your risk of infection or parasitic disease. Cooking food destroys bacteria and parasites. Milk that is not pasteurized may also cause illness.

Precautions

  • Avoid eating raw fish (sushi, ceviche), meats or eggs.
  • Only drink pasturized milk.
  • Cook your fish, meat, poultry and eggs thoroughly.
  • Always wash cutting boards after slicing any raw fish, meats, or poultry.
Recommendations

  • Run plastic cutting boards through the dishwasher.
  • Microwave wooden boards for five minutes.

Medications and Herbs

Some medications and herbs may harm your baby. Before taking any medication or medicinal herbs during your pregnancy, ask your health care provider these questions:

  • What is this medicine/herb?
  • What does it treat?
  • What are the side effects my baby or I may experience?
  • What is the smallest effective dose?
  • How long will I need to take this medication?

Precautions

Be cautious about using medicines that contain multiple ingredients. They are more likely to contain extra substances, that may harm your baby.

Saunas and Hot Tubs

Avoid saunas and hot tubs that maintain a temperature greater than body temperature. They can potentially cause overheating and possible affect the development of your baby.

Precautions

Avoid possible overheating. Check with your health care provider for recommendations.

Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis is a condition caused by a parasite found in cat feces, plant soil, and raw or undercooked meat. The parasite can cause brain damage in a developing baby if the mother becomes infected during pregnancy.

Precautions

  • Avoid contact with cat feces. Have someone else change the litter box.
  • Wash dirt from fresh produce before eating.
  • Use gloves when you garden.
  • A blood test is available to determine if you have been exposed to toxoplasmosis. Ask your health care provider for more information.
  • Cook all meat to at least medium, preferably well done.

Video Display Terminals (VDTs)

At this time, there are no solid research findings regarding the effects of computer monitors or Video Display Terminals (VDT) on a developing baby.

Precautions

  • Reduce your exposure to VDT's whenever possible.
  • Be sure to take frequent stretch breaks and look away from the computer screen whenever possible.

Other Precautions and Concerns

Fetal Solvent Syndrome - Risk for Major Birth Defectors

Exposure to chemicals may cause birth defects. Talk with your health care provider if you are concerned about exposure to chemicals in your environment.

Rh Negative Mothers and Rhogam

If you (mother) are Rh negative and your baby's blood is Rh positive there is an Rh incompatibility. Because some of the baby's red blood cells leak into your system, your body will produce antibodies to fight the Rh factor as if it were a harmful substance. These antibodies will remain in your body and may affect your next baby. If you are Rh negative, you will be given an injection of Rhogam at about 28 weeks of pregnancy, and within 72 hours after a birth, miscarriage, abortion or amniocentesis. The Rhogam will prevent your body from making these harmful antibodies. If your baby is Rh negative, you will not need Rhogam after delivery. Talk with your health care provider for more information.

Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is also called Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) or toxemia. The cause of preeclampsia is unknown. It occurs in 5% of pregnancies and is most common in:

  • First pregnancies
  • Twin or other multiple pregnancies
  • Women with high blood pressure before 20 weeks of pregnancy
  • Teenage pregnancies
  • Women with diabetes
  • Women who have had preeclampsia during a previous pregnancy
Symptoms of preeclampsia include a rise in blood pressure, protein in your urine and rapid weight gain due to fluid retention. If left untreated, preeclampsia can cause many problems that could be life threatening to you and your baby. Early preeclampsia can be diagnosed during a routine visit with your health care provider. Call your health care provider immediately if you experience blurred vision, headache, upper abdominal pain, rapid weight gain or increased swelling.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes only occurs during pregnancy. The changes in your body during pregnancy can cause your blood sugar (glucose) levels to be high, which can cause problems for you and your baby. You will receive specific education on how to care for yourself if you develop gestational diabetes. It is very important to follow the diet, exercise, and blood sugar monitoring plans given to you.

Gestational diabetes is most likely to develop if you:

  • Are overweight
  • Have a family history of diabetes
  • Gave birth to a baby weighing 9 pounds or more
  • Had a baby who died before birth
  • Had gestational diabetes in the past
  • Are of Latin, American Indian, African, Asian or Pacific Islander descent
You and your baby may have the following problems if you don't keep your blood sugar under control:

  • Baby

    • Big baby
    • Premature birth
    • Jaundice
    • Low blood sugar
    • Stillborn (although this is rare)

  • Mother

    • High blood pressure
    • Bladder or kidney infection
    • Shortness of breath
    • Harder birth and longer recovery time
